Official perjury complaint lodged following Sheridan libel victory

07-AUG-06

Scottish police have received a formal complaint that witnesses in the Tommy Sheridan libel trial committed perjury, increasing the likelihood of a criminal investigation.

Mr Sheridan, founder of the Scottish Socialists Party and MSP, on Friday won his £200,000 libel case against News of the World claims that he was a swinger.

Following the ruling, a member of the public lodged a complaint with the Lothian and Borders police that witnesses had lied under oath.

The complaint has been lodged with the Crown Office for a decision on whether a criminal inquiry will be required.

Independent MSP Brian Monteith is also expected to lodge a complaint, reports the Times.

A formal investigation would be likely to tear apart the Scottish Socialists, 11 senior members of which took the stand to testify against Mr Sheridan during the case.

Mr Sheridan has claimed that formal meeting notes that referred to his alleged adultery were forged and that members of his party were attempting to frame him.
